Yellow-pine Chipmunk Images, Facts and Information:

Neotamias amoenus

  • Yellow-pine Chipmunks are small, agile rodents with reddish-brown or grayish backs, dark and light facial stripes, and five distinct dark stripes running the length of their bodies. Their bellies are whitish to buff, and they have long bushy tails used for balance and communication. Adults range from 7 to 9 inches in total length including the tail.
  • Yellow-pine Chipmunks are found in the western United States, from British Columbia and Washington south through Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and into western Colorado. They inhabit open pine and mixed conifer forests, brushy slopes, and forest edges, often at mid to high elevations.
  • Yellow-pine Chipmunks are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, nuts, fruits, berries, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. They collect and store food in their cheek pouches and cache it in underground burrows or under logs and rocks.
  • Breeding occurs in spring after hibernation. Females produce one litter per year of 4 to 6 young, which are born blind and hairless. Juveniles emerge from the nest after about a month and are independent shortly thereafter.
  • Yellow-pine Chipmunks are active during the day and spend much of their time foraging or sunning near cover. They hibernate through winter in burrows, waking occasionally during mild periods.
  • A group of chipmunks is called a “scurry” or a “burrow.”
