Zion National Park

Zion National Park Images and Information:

  • Zion National Park, established in 1919, is one of Utah’s most remarkable natural sanctuaries, encompassing 146,000 acres of rugged cliffs, deep canyons, and sculpted sandstone formations shaped over millions of years by the Virgin River.
  • The park’s varied elevation, from the desert floor at 3,600 feet to towering plateaus above 8,000 feet, supports a rich diversity of life. Mule deer, bighorn sheep, rock squirrels, and gray foxes roam the mesas and canyons, while peregrine falcons, golden eagles, canyon wrens, and hummingbirds animate the skies and cliffs.
  • Zion’s landscape reveals an interplay of red, cream, and pink rock layers, each telling part of the geologic story of ancient seas, shifting dunes, and relentless erosion. Cottonwood trees and willows trace the rippling banks of the Virgin River, creating essential habitat and lush contrast to the desert stone.
  • Long before it became a national park, this region was home to ancestral Puebloans and Southern Paiute people, who left behind rock art, artifacts, and cultural legacies that still echo through the canyons. In Zion, the meeting of earth, water, and time continues to shape a living tapestry of natural beauty and deep history.
