- Blue-eyed Darner dragonflies are large, fast-flying dragonflies with slender, elongated bodies and bright blue eyes. Males have striking blue and brown markings along the abdomen, while females display a mix of green or brown with blue highlights. Adults typically measure about 2.8 to 3.3 inches in length.
- Blue-eyed Darner dragonflies are found across much of North America, from southern Canada through the United States and into Mexico. These dragonflies inhabit lakes, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams, and they are often seen patrolling open areas, woodland edges, or fields far from water.
- Blue-eyed Darners are aerial predators that feed on flying insects such as mosquitoes, flies, and small moths, capturing their prey in flight with spiny legs.
- Females lay eggs individually in submerged vegetation or plant stems near the water’s edge. The aquatic nymphs (naiads) develop underwater, preying on small aquatic invertebrates until emerging as adults.
- Blue-eyed Darner dragonflies are known for their strong flight and are one of the few dragonfly species that may migrate seasonally.
- A group of dragonflies can be called a “cluster” or a “flight” of dragonflies.
