Long-horned Bee Images, Facts and Information:

Tribe Eucerini

  • Long-horned Bees are medium-sized solitary bees characterized by their elongated antennae, especially prominent in males. They have robust, hairy bodies that are typically black or dark brown with bands of pale hairs on the abdomen and dense hair on the legs that aids in pollen collection.
  • Long-horned Bees are found throughout North America, from southern Canada to Mexico. They inhabit open areas such as prairies, meadows, fields, and gardens where flowering plants are abundant. They are most active during warm summer months when many of their preferred flowers bloom.
  • Long-horned Bees feed on nectar and collect pollen from various flowering plants. Many species show floral preferences, often visiting members of the sunflower and aster families.
  • Female Long-horned Bees nest in the ground, excavating tunnels in sandy or loose soil. Each female builds and provisions her own nest with pollen and nectar before laying a single egg in each cell. Larvae develop underground, pupate, and emerge as adults the following year.
  • Male Long-horned Bees often sleep by clinging to stems or leaves with their mandibles, gathering in small groups at night.
  • A group of Long-horned Bees can be called a “swarm” or “aggregation” of bees.
