  • Barred Owls are medium-sized, elusive, nocturnal owls characterized by their dark eyes and striking white and tawny feathers.
  • Barred Owls can be found breeding in various regions of North America, ranging from the northwestern to the northeastern United States, and extending southward to Mexico. While they are year-round residents in most parts of their range, they are absent only in the farthest northern areas.
  • Barred Owls predominantly feed on small mammals such as mice, rats, voles, lemmings, and shrews. However, their diet also includes bats, rabbits, and birds. In fact, research studies have indicated that Barred Owls consume twice as much prey relative to their body weight compared to other owl species.
  • Barred Owls lay 2 to 3 eggs which hatch in 28 and 33 days. The females incubate the eggs and they are monogamous.
  • Known by various nicknames, Barred Owls have a range of descriptive monikers including monkey-faced owl, silver owl, white owl, delicate owl, golden owl, steeple owl, straw owl, barnyard owl, church owl, night owl, ghost owl, hobgoblin owl, screech owl, and death owl.
