Peachy Daylily – Nikon D8800, f7.2, 1/264, ISO 50, 86mm, natural light
Last month I was looking through some of my earliest image archives and came across a photo of a peachy-colored Daylily that I had taken while exploring with my friend Patty at the Florida Botanical Gardens in Pinellas County, Florida.
Before my bird photography obsession kicked in I would often go exploring in the gardens around the state and photograph the flowers, trees, plants, bees and butterflies I found there and quite often Patty was with me. She and I went to the same high school together in Germany and even though I didn’t know her then we connected later in life and became the best of friends. We saw a lot of Florida together!
When I think back on those days I have to think of how much easier it was to photograph the butterflies, flowers, trees, grasses and bees than it is to photograph wild birds on the wing. I miss the days of exploring with Patty but I am glad I switched my focus to birds. They are my calling, my delight and my joy. I’m glad I became addicted to bird photography.
I just thought some of you might like to see what I did with my camera before my obsession with bird photography kicked in.

Mia, I did the same thing. I had an 8 megapixel full body (not SLR) zoom with a macro setting and you could get down to about 2 x 3 inches. It’s allowed you to take pretty good flower pictures – and you didn’t even need to leave the yard! I bet I still have a few hundred of them.

I may not be the same Patty as your Florida friend, but I lived in that beautiful state too…I loved the colors and variety of flowers and miss them! “Florida”, meaning “flowered” in Spanish, is one of the best named states. There was ALWAYS some beautiful flower, bush, vine or tree in bloom. I don’t remember seeing daylilies, one of my favorite flowers, in South Miami,where we lived. Nice to see one of your incredible flower photos, Mia…you’ve taken so many beautiful ones!!!
