Least Chipmunk in a Golden Currant bush – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1600, ISO 640, -0.7 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
When bird activity slows down or when I am actively scanning for birds I often see other subjects that I can’t resist photographing. While looking for and photographing birds in the Wasatch Mountains this past Sunday I also had some furry critters in my viewfinder. That morning chipmunks seemed to be everywhere I looked so when they came out into the open I focused on them when there weren’t birds around.
I noticed that the Golden Currants have started to ripen and this chipmunk was actively feeding on the fruits when I caught sight of it and twisted my body like a pretzel to take a few photos of it. Sitting inside a vehicle and using it as a mobile blind does have its limitations as far as range of movement goes.
I love how in this image it appears that the chipmunk was looking directly at me and even though the setting is busy how well the chippy stands out.
I hope to photograph more chipmunks soon.
Life is good.

I can’t imagine anyone not loving this pic. The composition is perfect and detail you captured is extraordinary. Thanks Mia.
I love ALL of your photos, including your non-bird ones…keep them ciming! This is a beauty!!!
Great shot — wonderful detail, Mia! Glad he’s getting some snackage. 🙂
In my experience birds and critters KNOW when things are ripe. And are super quick.
Love this beastie.
Thank you.
Oh! I am so jealous, you got the shot I was trying for a few days ago! Great photo! I love these fast spunky little rodents.
