Two Least Chipmunks resting in a bush, Wasatch Mountains, Morgan County, UtahTwo Least Chipmunks resting in a bush – Nikon D500, f13, 1/500, ISO 640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

One year ago today I photographed a pair of Least Chipmunks playing with each other in a bush while up in the Wasatch mountains. I only shared one photo of the two chipmunks last year in a post because I thought the image was fun, had a touch of whimsy to it and it isn’t all that often that I am able to take photos with two chipmunks in the same frame. In that photo the chipmunk at the top had placed its tail over the head of the chipmunk at the lower part of the image.

In that post I mentioned that I had taken more photos of that two Least Chipmunks and that I’d probably share more photos of them over the winter. Well, I didn’t get that done so I decided that I would share one more photo of the chippies today.

I picked this photo of the two Least Chipmunks out of the many I had taken that morning because to me it feels like there is a touch of intimacy to it. When I first looked at this photo on my monitor at home I liked that I was able to get both of the chipmunks sharply in focus and that alone would have been enough for me to keep this file.

Then as my eyes wandered through the frame I kept going back to where I saw the lower chipmunk’s paw touching the tail of the upper chipmunk. I kept thinking of the connection between these two chipmunks and how sometimes for humans just a touch can say “I’m here” for you. That matters.

Life is good. Stay safe.
