Yellow Garden Spider with prey at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge – Canon R7, handheld, f9, 1/1250, ISO 500, -1.0 EV, Canon RF 100-500mm at 500mm, natural light
Last week, while visiting Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge here in Oklahoma, I was happy to see and photograph a Yellow Garden Spider with prey.
Even though I’ve been searching for them, this was my first and only Yellow Garden Spider sighting of the year. This spider was located close to the edge of the dirt road near a stand of trees.
I wish I knew what the prey was, but it was wrapped so thickly in the spider’s webbing that I simply couldn’t tell what it was.
It won’t be long before cooler nighttime temps and mornings arrive here, and I won’t see spiders again until next spring.
We had 44 days with temps of 100°F or higher this summer, and one day even got to 111°F. I am ready for cooler mornings and the birds that reside at the refuge during the winter to arrive.
I’ve seen reports of Snow Geese in Missouri, which means they are only really one state away. Plus, White-throated Sparrows have already migrated into Oklahoma.
Soon, I hope to have them in my viewfinder again!
Life is good.
Mia
