Image Title and Information

Title: Southern Two-Striped Walkingsticks mating

Location: Weedon Island Preserve, Pinellas County, FL

Date: 11/6/2005

Caution:

I did not know at the time I photographed this pair of Southern Two-Striped Walkingsticks mating that they are dangerous because of a very potent, strong smelling chemical defense spray that they can shoot several feet with or without provocation that affects eyes and mucous membranes in pets and humans. It can cause damage to eyes that can last up to five days that include symptoms of burning, swelling and reddening of the cornea. If sprayed flush with water and get medical help from a doctor or in the case of pets find a veterinarian.

I was close enough to be sprayed when I took this image.
