Adult White-crowned Sparrow on a wire fence – Nikon D300, f6.3, 1/2000, ISO 640, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 400mm, natural light
In the Centennial Valley of Montana at this time of the year I see plenty of White-crowned Sparrows of the Interior West sub-species. Although most of them that I see are juveniles there are also adults hanging around foraging too.
This adult White-crowned Sparrow was perched on a rusty wire fence along the road and caught my eye as I had my lens aimed high at a Red-tailed Hawk perched on a power pole.
The angle was steep for the hawk so I decided to take images of the White-crowned while waiting for the Red-tailed to lift off.
Some folks may not like the wire fence perch but I liked the strong graphic lines in this photo. Even if they are human made.
I was so focused on the sparrow that I didn’t even see the hawk take off from the pole but I don’t regret taking the images of this lovely adult White-crowned Sparrow.

Sparrows are (yet) another of the birds I have a soft spot for. And they improve a rusty wire fence immensely.
Nice. Have you been to Escalante? We are thinking about spending a day down there in a couple weeks. We have a couple extra days at the end of our Yellowstone trip. Two days for Antelope Island and two free days for Escalante. Looks cool and my Wife’s maiden name is Escalante.
Why is it I just melt when I see sparrows? There is something so deeply felt that it lends me vitality in my daily life. Your great photo of this white-crowned sparrow is such a treat. Many thanks.
