Spotted Sandpiper on the Weber River, Summit County, UtahSpotted Sandpiper on the Weber River – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

Two days ago while near the Weber River up in Summit County I heard a familiar sound and I knew from that sound that a Spotted Sandpiper was nearby. I heard the song over the sounds of rushing water and loud vehicles moving on the interstate. It isn’t that the songs of of Spotted Sandpipers are that loud it is because I have trained my ears to listen for bird songs and calls.

Spotted Sandpiper song.

I looked around and spotted the Spotted Sandpiper bobbing its bottom up and down while perched on a log in the rushing river swollen from spring run off. The Spotted Sandpiper was farther away than I would have liked but any time I get to photograph these sandpipers is a good time for me. I used to see them in Florida when I lived there but they weren’t in breeding plumage like this one is.

Even though the Spotted Sandpiper is small in the frame in my photo I like this image because it shows the habitat along with the bird. Hopefully sometime this year I will be able to obtain closer images of this species that always makes me smile because of their bouncing butts and their flute-like song.

Life is good.
