Female Coyote

Female CoyoteFemale Coyote – Nikon D300, f8, 1/640, ISO 400, +0.3 EV, Nikkor 200-400mm VR with 1.4x TC at 314mm, not baited or called in, natural light

I look at this image and I see intelligence in the Coyote’s eyes. I see a warm-blooded creature who is doing what it needs to do to survive. I see a female who is nursing pups. I see beauty.

Photographed on Antelope Island State Park.

Oh, yes. Very beautiful, and wise.
i’m always catch my breath when i see them in our NJ neck of the woods…which seems to populated (even in the far northwest corner) compared to the southwest landscape where i grew up.

Zephyr, Coyotes still make me catch my breath when I see them and I see them often. They are magnificent. Thank you.

It is always a treat to see the coyotes of Antelope Island through your excellent portraits. They must have an affinity for you. Do you think that they recognize you?

    • Mia McPherson May 7, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Julie, I don’t think the coyotes recognize me but some are more cooperative than others. Today I didn’t see any on the island. Thanks for your comment.

Nicely said, and photographed, Mia. These much-maligned animals deserve far more respect and appreciation.

    • Mia McPherson May 7, 2012 at 6:58 pm

Mel, I agree, Coyotes do deserve more respect and appreciation. When they are killed the rodent population goes up and then people poison the rodents, not a natural balance at all. Thanks for your comment.

She IS a beauty Mia. Lovely photo! I saw 3 coyotes right outside my gate when I was leaving for the airport at 5:30 this morning. Coyotes are protected in Corrales where I live. On a related note, we have NO feral/stray cats.

    • Mia McPherson May 7, 2012 at 6:54 pm

Linda, I wish that Coyotes were protected in many more areas. It is a crime to kill a dog, Coyotes are canines so it ought to be against the law to kill them too.
