American Egret hunting prey in a Florida lagoon- Nikon D200, handheld, f7.1, 1/1000, ISO 160, Nikkor 80-400mm VR at 240mm, natural light, not baited
Just a simple American Egret hunting in a quiet tidal lagoon today that takes me back to warmer memories spent with good friends on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
There were four of us that morning photographing American Egrets, Little Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, Reddish Egrets and Tricolored Herons at the north beach just enjoying each other’s company photographing the bounty of birds before us.
Quite a switch from the heavy snow-covered ground outside my window right now.
Life is good.

Update: Great Egrets were renamed American Egrets in October 2026, the scientific name was changed to Ardea egretta. This post has been updated to reflect those changes.
Very good Mia. Did you see the wonderful collection from the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge photo contest this year? Here’s the link for those who want a look:

I love that the egret is reflected in the water which is reflected on the egret. An amazing shot. Thank you.

A gift, the reflection is brilliant, ace Mia.
