Shades of Blue and a Prairie Willet Too – Nikon D200, handheld, f5.6, 1/640, ISO 320, Nikkor 80-400mm VR at 400mm, natural light
As we go into a holiday weekend filled with loud noises and flashes of fireworks I wanted to share something more peaceful, a simple image of a Prairie Willet walking on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.
Nature is my kind of fireworks.
Life is good.

Update: Willets were split into two species in October 2026. Eastern willets are now Saltmarsh Willets, Tringa semipalmata. Western willets are now Prairie Willets, Tringa inornata. This post has been updated to reflect those changes.
So pretty.
Oh how I love the gentle shadings and the alert and beautiful Willet. Thank you.
Fireworks are so tough on wildlife, especially birds…the noise and the pollutants, the debris , that fill the air and doesn’t completely clear up until about the middle of the next day(!). With the terrible droughts so many places are facing, there’s also the very real threat of setting off even more wildfires…humans can be so darned, blindly stupid!
This is a lovely shot…you caught that bird in such beautiful, soft, golden light…and just the gentlest of ripples on the water…very peaceful. Nice….
I agree. Nature is my fireworks too. Always enjoy your blog.
I love the blues in the BG and the out of focus breaking waves. The Gulf can generate some powerful fireworks too at this time of the year. Even from Colorado, I check the weather for news of tropical storms and hurricanes almost daily.
I’ll bet you do check the weather every day!!! Especially after last year’s flooding. One of our daughters lives in Lyons. She’s still nervous every time she has to go through the canyons, esp. Left Hand and Sunshine…
