Floating mallard feather, Salt Lake County, UtahFloating mallard feather – Nikon D500, f6.3, 1/5000, ISO 800, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

After five days of mostly dreary weather the clouds scuttled away for a bit yesterday about mid-morning. I felt that I had to go outside even if it was just for a few minutes so I went down to my local pond where I could see the snow-capped mountains, sunshine, plus birds on the water and on the wing.

There were a few mallards on the shoreline that were too close to photograph and Canada Geese flying overhead but the light angle wasn’t the best on the Redheads out in the middle of the pond so I relaxed for a bit and took the views in.

Then I noticed a mallard feather floating on the pond and realized that I had a birdy subject to photograph.

This was my favorite image of the morning. Just a fluffy mallard feather and the silky reflections on the pond.

Life is good.
