Immature White-crowned Sparrow on a lichen covered rock, Box Elder County, UtahImmature White-crowned Sparrow on a lichen covered rock – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/1250, ISO 1250, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TX, natural light

With autumn around the corner I’m looking forward to seeing and photographing more sparrows than I have seen during the summer. I will see sparrows that are just migrating through northern Utah on their way to their wintering grounds and sparrows that will make their way here to spend the coldest months of the year at lower elevations.

I am also looking forward to taking photos that have to colors of fall in them. This photo of an immature White-crowned Sparrow perched on a lichen covered rock has some of the colors of fall in it. The pumpkin orange and mustard yellow lichens on the rock add a dash of autumn colors. The image was taken around this time last year on a very smoky morning in far northern Utah.

White-crowned Sparrows breed in Utah at high elevations and will spend the winters down in the valleys. Now that the weather is cooling down I should be seeing, hearing, and photographing these sparrows in many of the locations that I head to in the field.

Life is good.
