What bird is cuter than a fluffy butt Pied-billed Grebe? There are probably quite a few birds as cute but this one taken four years ago tickled my fancy today.

The Pied-billed Grebe was preening as it floated on the cold water of a neighborhood pond in between catching crawdads to eat. Pied-billed Grebes can be found in Utah year round. As long as there is open water at my neighborhood ponds these small grebes will hang around all winter long.

Typically the Pied-billed Grebes will leave my local ponds during the breeding season because they don’t provide suitable nesting habitat. I’ve photographed Pied-billed Grebes in flight at my local pond which is unusual since they usually only fly at night.

One thing that I always notice about Pied-billed Grebes is that they have cute, little fluffy butts. This photo shows that well and makes me laugh.

We could all use more smiles and laughter.

Life is good.
