Double-crested Cormorant flying in a snow storm, Salt Lake County, UtahDouble-crested Cormorant flying in a snow storm – Nikon D500, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 1250, +1.7 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light

I woke yesterday morning to a snow storm with more than 5 inches of snow on my Jeep with more snow to come throughout the day and I decided to stick close to home because of poor weather and road conditions. I did go down to check out the local pond hoping that the flock of Lesser Scaups I had seen at the pond a few days ago would still be there so I could photograph them with falling snow. The scaups were not at the pond but there were a few other birds that caught my eyes.

One of the birds that caught my attention at my local pond yesterday during the snow storm was an adult Double-crested Cormorant flying in front of a willow tree with lots of snowflakes in the frame. I didn’t care for the photos of the cormorant against the sky because I couldn’t see the falling snow except in front of the bird but with the willow tree behind it the snowflakes stood out well.

The snow storm yesterday may well be the last one this winter in the Salt Lake Valley since the forecasts for the next few weeks are showing much warmer temps and far more sunshine. As much as I love photographing birds in falling snow I am ready to move forward into spring and the migrants that are winging their way here to northern Utah.

If you had trouble with my site being down or unreachable yesterday that is because my hosting provider had a few internal and external network difficulties throughout the day. Facebook being down or dysfunctional got more press though. 🙂

Life is good.
