This morning, I’m sharing a male Belted Kingfisher photo that I took one year ago today. I was photographing ducks at one of my local ponds when he flew in.

The kingfisher perched on a tree that used to hang over the pond. I say ‘used to’ because last year, that gorgeous old tree was chopped down by the city. I don’t know why; it looked healthy to me, but I am not an arborist, and there could have been issues with the tree. Thankfully, the city did replace the trees they cut down with new ones.

I adore kingfishers, partly because of their appearance, their spunky attitudes, and because they are challenging to photograph.

When I was down at this pond three days ago, I had a female Belted Kingfisher fly by. She reminded me that I had never shared this male kingfisher photo I took and edited one year ago today. In my mind I could ‘see’ that kingfisher file in a folder on my computer as the female kingfisher flew off.

I have a folder on one of my external hard drives named ‘4 my galleries’. It isn’t just for my galleries, though. I also use it to store photos I’ve edited that I plan on or might want to share here on my site. This morning, that folder had 868 photo files in it.

You can see why I never run out of photos to share here.

Now that I’ve added this image to my photo galleries and used it here, it will be deleted from this folder but copied over to a separate ‘Belted Kingfisher’ gallery folder. It will also be copied to a folder I call ‘blog-posted’, which I use to keep track of what I have shared in my daily posts. All the images in my folders are alphabetized by species or location to make it easy for me to locate them.

I have excellent memory recall, which includes what I see. That is how I ‘saw’ this kingfisher photo in the folder in my mind when the female kingfisher was in view. This kingfisher image is in the middle of the bottom row.

Anyhow, I thought including this screenshot might be of interest to part of my photo storage/filing system for other photographers. My original image files are stored by year, date, and location on external drives. I don’t use a photo file organizing program, I use my memory.

I never, ever store originals on my device hard drive. It is too easy to lose them completely that way if a computer has a catastrophic failure and dies.

Life is good.

Mia
