This morning I’m sharing two photos of blooming American Black Elderberry that I took last week at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma.

In Utah I used to enjoy photographing another elderberry species, Blue Elderberry, Sambucus cerulea. Here in Arkansas and Oklahoma, the native American Black Elderberry, Sambucus canadensis, is what I see and photograph.

I’ve always loved the delicate, lacy-looking flowers of elderberry shrubs. The berries, or drupes, are pretty too.

I had hoped to take more American Black Elderberry photos this spring in softer light. But in the eight days since I took these, the weather hasn’t been cooperating. By the time I get back to the refuge, I think the elderberries will have finished blooming.

I’ll have to wait and see!

Life is good.
