I was tickled to photograph a Swamp Rabbit on my first visit to Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas while on the wildlife drive.
Swamp Rabbit at Holla Bend NWR
The refuge was beautiful, with grasslands, views of the Arkansas River, bottomland hardwood forests, and some agricultural lands. Steve Creek and I saw upwards of 175 White-tailed Deer there, including bucks in velvet and young spotted fawns.
Insect repellent is very much needed at this time of year in some locations. I learned that after stopping to answer the call of nature. The mosquitoes zeroed in on places I hadn’t thought to spray. 😐 🦟
We saw quite a few Swamp Rabbits in one area of the wildlife drive. This rabbit was the most cooperative, and it wasn’t in bad light at all.
I’m looking forward to exploring more of Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge in other seasons. I bet it looks spectacular during the fall, winter, and spring too!
Life is good.

Oh my! One is not always prepared for a mosquito’s aim. 🙀
Thank you for sharing this lovely rabbit.
