Utah Serviceberries in the Wasatch Mountains – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/640, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
Utah Serviceberries on their own make for lovely photos when the fruit is ripe because they look juicy and delicious but when there is a bird to the frame and I am one happy bird photographer!
I’ve grown weary of the gray skies and dreary weather that has kept me from going into the field and I felt like I needed a burst of green, blue and purple this morning combined with a warbler to shake off that weary feeling so I went into my archives and found these serviceberry and Orange-crowned Warbler images to share today.
Foraging Orange-crowned Warbler – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/320, ISO 500, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
I have found that Orange-crowned Warblers are much harder for me to find in the Wasatch Mountains than Yellow Warblers are so I get very excited when I spot them. Even my keen eyes have trouble seeing them when they are buried in the serviceberry shrubs because they blend into the habitat easily so when they come out into the open I am delighted to be able to photograph them.
This beautiful Orange-crowned Warbler popped out into the open while she was foraging on the ripened berries and has some of the juice on her bill. She isn’t very colorful but her surroundings sure are!
Curious Orange-crowned Warbler in a Serviceberry – Nikon D500, f7.1, 1/200, ISO 500, +0.3 EV, Nikkor 500mm VR with 1.4x TC, natural light
This Orange-crowned Warbler was only in my viewfinder for about a minute but she gave me great views and quite a few different poses to photograph and I was delighted with the photos I took.
There is a dusting of snow on the ground outside this morning and gray clouds overhead but looking at these images this morning reminds me that before too long ole man winter will take his leave and then the birds of spring and summer will arrive.
Life is good.

The colours on the warbler are subtle, and combined with the bursting berries are reassuring and refreshing. We are still stuck in the deep freeze and the snow is beautiful but blinds me to much detail, however that is something I like about -20, -30 and -40; it is usually sunny and rather strange to feel the heat of the sun on one’s back when the temperatures are so cold. If there is wind it is bone-chilling and hurts any exposed skin. I am seeing a few bloggers go into their files to share more photos of the type to bring us promises of spring. We will all welcome it.
What beautiful images! The colors and detail you captured are wonderful and the composition…perfect. Thanks Mia.
Still locked in winter out here! So, it’s very nice to wake up to an Orange-crowned Warbler. Thanks for sharing!
